Wanted Sign to the Answer “Why”
With the priest’s siblings in the pews
he sprinkles holy water, sway a censor,
smoke dusts his mother’s casket.
Inside a corpse of a woman
who died at 67.
Two days later,
ceiling lights flicker
over a table of candles
in red jars. Some lit.
Heat waves over the glow
like exposed hot coals
in a camp fire. Her son
the mailman wipes
salty water his eyes drip
then lower the lids, asks.
Few minutes pass,
he opens them,
sees one wick
he thought unlit burns
in this empty hall
with closed windows
no running fans.
This flame wiggles
bright clear a happy dance
like a gliding planchette
give answers
on a Ouija board.
